In January, crews began to erect scaffolding in the theater of the Opera House and work began on the first phase of a multi-stage restoration process--the installation of modern fire suppression and safety systems!

In 1984, the Historic Homestake Opera House in Lead, South Dakota burned. The Opera House and Community Center (housing the city's library, pool hall, indoor aquatic facility, and bowling alley) was the heart of the community and the center of gravity on main street in Lead.

After sitting empty for decades the restoration, begun in 1993 launched the early stages of restoring this The Jewel of the Black Hills to its former glory. The Jewel of the Black Hills Capital Campaign, officially launched in spring of 2022 has raised over $3.4 million of $8 million needed to fully restore the Opera House. In Spring of 2023, the first step of the continued restoration began when scaffolding was erected in the theater and fire suppression systems were installed throughout the building. Restoration efforts and fundraising are on-going.
