Of late, I have been reading Making Contemporary Theatre edited by Jen Harvie and Andy Lavender. In it, I came across a quote from Simon McBurney's journal. He writes, "When you are making theatre, ideas are never the problem. There are hundreds of ideas. It's finding how to transmit them. It's all about how the idea is expressed. It's not a logical thing... most importantly it involves the imagination of the audience: once you plug into that, theatre lives." And, in reading that, I found myself drawn to the very heart of the matter!
Over the course of the Homestake Opera House's 110 years (and specifically the post-fire years), the challenge has been how to transmit the idea. How do we tell the story of this place and how does that story plug into the imagination of our community and our region? How do we celebrate and share the past while moving forward into the future, providing space for art, cultural, and educational opportunities for all ages? We do that by telling the story of yesterday with an eye toward tomorrow! We learn from what came before and intentionally build upon it to better our future. We seek excellence while seeing every moment as an opportunity to learn and grow.
With this in mind, we are forging a bold path to ensure the future of the Homestake Opera House remains bright and one's experience when they gather here is not merely positive, but inspiring - not merely comfortable, but creative! With new windows installed in the Atrium, new and improved signage throughout the building, spaces coming to life to help tell the story of this place, improvements to our stage lighting, a brand new website up and running (www.homestakeoperahouse.org), and the constant buzz of activity (from rehearsals to tours to meetings and events), the opera house is brimming with life! And, I invite you to plug in and see how theatre (and the arts) lives here.
